Some people know and some people do not know that I used to smoke cigarettes for many years and not a whole lot of people know the story about how I started and how I found a way to quit so I figured I would share that here in this blog. How And When Did I StartMost people would think I actually started because of peer pressure and to look cool but that was not the case with me. When I was 10 years old my sister who was 15 at the time and not even legal to smoke herself and her best friend who was the same age as my sister decided to give me a lit cigarette just to see if I would take it and if I could handle smoking it. Yes that is right they gave a 10 year old which was me a lit cigarette and said here smoke one with us. They were laughing the whole time thinking I was going to take a draw and get sick or just cough my head off. To their surprise though I took a huge draw and not only did it not phase me at all but I actually inhaled it as well. Both my sister and her friend were shocked! So after that first time not because of peer pressure but because of wanting to spend time with my sister every time she lit up I did too with her on most cases. Then I just got hooked even more from there. By the age of 13 or 14 I pretty much was buying my own cigarettes because I looked much older than I was and by the time my parents found out I was smoking they figured oh well I was going to do it anyways so why not just allow me to do it. So that is how I started smoking cigarettes. How And When I StoppedI decided one day in my 30's that I wanted to stop because the cost of cigarettes had more than tripled from the time I started and I started at such a young age that I had already been smoking for 20 years or more. I tried the gum, the patch, chewing on hard candy, sleeping days away so I would not smoke and so much more but nothing worked so I continued to smoke right up to my late 30's. Then one day I remembered what a family member told me on their death bed that smoked for almost 50 years but quit. They said "if you ever decide to quit it only takes will power and even when you do quit the cravings really never 100 percent go away. You just have to have the will power not to pick them up when those cravings come." That day I deciding something that would finally allow me to quit. I decided to every single time I got a craving for a cigarette I would get busy doing something with my hands or something to keep my mind occupied. Every single time I got a craving I would take the will power to do that and try to resist the cravings. After a day I did not smoke at all. Then after a week I did not smoke at all. After a month I did not smoke at all. Now almost 5 years later I have not smoked one cigarette. Sure I still get major cravings to smoke every once in a while but I just get busy when I do and the cravings eventually go away. So my decision to listen to what a family member had told me helped me quit smoking after almost 30 years! Things I Noticed After QuittingAfter quitting I started to notice some changes happening to me. I noticed after time my smell came back. I could actually smell other smokers. When I smoked and other people who did not would tell me I stink like I just smoked, which I did, I thought they were nuts because I could not smell as thing as a smoker LOL. I started to sleep better because I could breathe better and was not being kept up by smoking. Some people do not know it but cigarettes are stimulants. That is the reason why some people when they are tired they will light up or if they are nervous or depressed they will light up as well. I started to be able to taste food better and all the discoloring of smoking like on my fingers etc at times were never there ever again. After quitting you will notice some changes too. You Can Do It TooYou can also quit like I did with a little will power if you smoke cigarettes no matter how long you have been smoking for. Yes my actual way of quitting with getting busy doing something may not work for everyone but you can find something that you can stick to that will eventually help you quit. It can be done! It is truly a renewing of the mind. You know what some people say about how long it takes to create a habit and how long it takes to break it well I now believe that so much. Plus it saves on my health and also my money as well. So do not let anyone tell you or do not tell yourself that you cannot do it because I know if I can anyone can with will power. ConclusionThis is not a blog story to make fun of or down anyone who smokes. This is only my story of starting to smoke then quitting to maybe give people a little hope is all.
